I had a wonderful time in Finland at the end of March, playing free improv gigs in Helsinki and Tampere with the talented Phil Maguire (modular synth) and Net [Ed Trethowan] (modular synth, field recordings).
Phil and I flew out to Helsinki on 28 March, where we enjoyed amazing collections in Kiasma modern art gallery, and (my personal highlight) wandered around the Aalto-designed Finlandia Hall. Everything was covered in snow; Töölö Bay was entirely frozen over. On Thursday 29 March we met up with Ed and played solo sets at Third Space – an intimate and modern venue in the centre of the city.
We travelled by train to the city of Tampere, around 170km north of Helsinki, which sits on the Tammerkoski rapids. On Saturday 31 March we each played solo sets at Ravintola 931, an art deco cinema.
