Accessible Composition: New Works and Processes For Disabled and Neurodivergent Musicians

In June 2025, I got my PhD in Composition from Royal Northern College of Music. After minor corrections, I’m so excited that it’s available for everyone to see and hear online.

Explore the portfolio here: https://megansteinberg.myportfolio.com/

The site features all the scores; information on the musicians; the full commentary (c. 24k words), and an Easy Read version. I’d love to get an audio transcription of both versions of the commentary, but it would be quite a time-consuming process that I haven’t been able to do so far. With all the technical language and names, I’m not sure AI would work.

A few of the pieces are not available as audio (yet!) as they are being mixed and mastered for a commercial album release. I hope the pieces available satiate your curiosity; it was important to me that these musicians and their instruments get as wide a platform as possible.

Is there something missing from the portfolio site that would make it more accessible for you or people you know? Contact me and let me know so I can do my best to add it.

I am aware that many of the scores/parts are not accessible to all musicians. For example for some visually impaired and blind musicians, as most scores rely on sight and cannot be transcribed into braille music/text in their current forms. The focus of the project, as I have written about in the commentary, is to respond directly to the needs of the performers I was working with. I had 3 years and worked with around 45 musicians.

The work is not done. Nor will it ever be.

The purpose of this project was to compose music for Accessible Musical Instruments, d/Deaf, Disabled and neurodivergent performers. It was not intended to be a definitive portfolio of work for all disabled musicians, as that would be impossible. Disability is not a monolith, and there is no such thing as a score that would be accessible to every musician.

However, I would love to continue this work. As of 2026, more careful consideration and planning is needed to do so.

If you have any thoughts or feedback do get in touch. Also, if you want to play any of the scores. I’m happy to adapt scores to meet other access requirements. Some pieces are open to any instrument, some are written for specific instruments.
